Rams Beat Buccaneers 34-7 on Sunday Night Football: Full Recap, Stats, and What It Means for the NFC
The Los Angeles Rams are the best team in the NFC. After a 34-7 demolition of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at SoFi Stadium on Sunday Night Football, that’s not an argument anymore. Matthew Stafford threw three touchdown passes before halftime, Cobie Durant returned an interception 50 yards for a score, and the Rams’ defense held Tampa Bay to 193 total yards. Baker Mayfield left at halftime with a sprained left shoulder. The Bucs have now lost four of their last five.
Score by Quarter and Team Stats
Los Angeles built a 21-0 lead before the 10-minute mark of the second quarter and never looked back. The Bucs got one score — a 14-yard Mayfield-to-Tez-Johnson touchdown pass — but the Rams answered four plays later with another Adams score to make it 28-7. A Harrison Mevis field goal (his first in the NFL, from 40 yards) closed the half at 31-7. The second half was effectively garbage time.

How the Rams Put This Away Before Halftime
Stafford’s first drive took 80 yards and ended with a 1-yard fade to Davante Adams in the back of the end zone. Clean, efficient, exactly what you’d expect from an offense that has now led every single game since Week 6. Less than three minutes later, it was 14-0 and Tampa Bay hadn’t done anything wrong.
Cade Otton bobbled a catchable pass in the flat. Cornerback Cobie Durant, who calls himself the Land Shark, ripped the ball away mid-juggle and sprinted 50 yards down the sideline with Kam Kinchens blocking Mayfield away from the play. Durant’s second career pick-six. Stafford, watching from the sideline, raised his hand above his head like a fin. The stadium — the largest crowd in SoFi Stadium history, per reports — went loud.
Stafford then completed his first 12 passes of the game before hitting tight end Colby Parkinson on a 5-yard dart to make it 21-0. That was before the 10-minute mark of the second quarter. The Bucs did fight back briefly: Mayfield converted a third-and-long to move the chains, then found Johnson on a 14-yard crossing route to make it 21-7 with 5:03 left in the half. Four plays later, Stafford hit Adams for 24 yards and a touchdown. Then Mevis kicked a 40-yarder as time expired. Halftime: 31-7. Game over.

Baker Mayfield’s Injury and the Second Half
Mayfield hurt his left shoulder early but told the medical staff he was fine and returned. On the last play of the first half, a desperation Hail Mary attempt, he aggravated it. He did not return. He finished 9 of 19 for 60 passing yards with two interceptions and four scrambles for 19 yards. He came back to the sideline for the second half with his left arm in a sling.
Teddy Bridgewater replaced him and went 8 of 15 for 62 yards. The game was already decided, so Bridgewater’s numbers don’t mean much. What matters going forward is the MRI result Mayfield had on Monday. Todd Bowles spoke to reporters the following day and confirmed the team was assessing the injury and would have more information before Week 13. If Mayfield misses time, Bridgewater — a 14-year veteran who has started games in Minnesota, New Orleans, Denver, and Carolina — steps in.
Worth noting: neither of Mayfield’s interceptions was really his fault. The first was the Otton bobble. The second came on the Hail Mary. He was also under pressure for most of his snaps, sacked twice in the first half alone. The Bucs’ offensive line simply couldn’t handle the Rams’ front, and the passing attack never had time to get into any rhythm downfield. Tampa managed just 70 passing yards from Mayfield.
Player Performances
Stafford finished 25 of 35 for 273 yards and three touchdowns. Zero interceptions — his eighth consecutive game without one. The crowd was chanting “M-V-P” by the time his third touchdown connected. “It was a great atmosphere out there,” he said post-game. “Our fans did a great job showing up. Both sides of the ball gave them something to cheer about early and often.” Adams caught both his scores from under five yards out, a continuation of a strange pattern: eight straight games with a touchdown, and every single one of them covered fewer than five yards. He’s not beating people deep right now. He’s just always in the right spot.
Puka Nacua had seven catches for 97 yards. Jared Verse and Kobie Turner each had two sacks. Durant’s pick-six was the play of the night. Harrison Mevis, the Rams’ new kicker, went 2 for 2 including a 52-yarder in the fourth quarter — his first two NFL field goals, both converted.
For Tampa, the running game was actually the one thing that worked. Sean Tucker ran 12 times for 42 yards, Rachaad White added 38 on 12 carries. The Bucs ran for 123 yards total while their passing game was generating almost nothing. Todd Bowles acknowledged the ground game after the loss: “That’s our bell cow, but we’ve got to throw it better as well and we’ve got to play defense and special teams as well.” Chris Godwin, returning from a fibula injury after missing five weeks, had two catches on a 36% offensive snap share. Bowles said his usage would increase in Week 13.

NFC Standings After Week 12
The Rams moved to 9-2. Philadelphia lost to Dallas in overtime the same afternoon, which handed Los Angeles the NFC’s top seed going into Week 13. The Rams haven’t trailed since the second quarter of their Week 6 game against Baltimore. Six straight wins. They’re not just playing well; they’re playing with a kind of controlled confidence that’s been rare in a wide-open NFC this season.
Tampa fell to 6-5, tied for first in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers — who played Monday night at San Francisco. The Bucs started 5-1. They have now lost four of their last five, including road losses at Buffalo and Los Angeles in consecutive weeks. The defense has given up 106 points during the three-game skid. Whatever was working in October has clearly stopped working.
| NFC South | W | L |
|---|---|---|
| Atlanta Falcons | 6 | 5 |
| Carolina Panthers | 6 | 5 |
| Tampa Bay Buccaneers | 6 | 5 |
| New Orleans Saints | 3 | 8 |
| NFC West | W | L |
|---|---|---|
| Los Angeles Rams | 9 | 2 |
| Seattle Seahawks | – | – |
| Arizona Cardinals | – | – |
| San Francisco 49ers | – | – |
Both teams play Week 13 on November 30. The Bucs host Arizona at Raymond James Stadium, a game they need. The Rams travel to Carolina, where they’ll be heavy favorites. A win there pushes Los Angeles to 10-2 with six weeks left.
Rams vs. Buccaneers Series History and Head-to-Head Record
The Rams lead this series convincingly. In 29 total games (regular season and playoffs combined since 1977), Los Angeles is 19-10. Regular season only: 16-10. The Rams have also won all three of their playoff meetings with Tampa Bay, which is where this rivalry gets genuinely interesting.
The 1999 NFC Championship is the most famous game between these franchises and one of the more controversial moments in NFL postseason history. The “Greatest Show on Turf” Rams — Kurt Warner, Marshall Faulk, Isaac Bruce — beat Tampa Bay 11-6 in a game defined by defense and a disputed no-catch call on Bucs receiver Bert Emanuel. League officials later acknowledged the rule that governed the ruling was flawed and subsequently changed it. Tampa Bay fans have not forgotten.
There was also an NFC Championship meeting in January 2001, another Rams win. Then the 2021 NFC Divisional Round, when Los Angeles beat Tom Brady’s Buccaneers 30-27 in a game that went down to the wire — and preceded the Rams’ Super Bowl LVI title run. The Bucs’ last win in the series came on November 6, 2022, a 16-13 road win at SoFi Stadium. Since then, LA has won three straight in the series. The all-time average score across all 29 games is roughly 23-20 in favor of the Rams — a series that’s been closer than the recent games suggest.
Four Takeaways From Sunday Night
The Stafford MVP conversation is real now. Eight games without an interception. Three touchdowns in a half on Sunday Night Football against a team that came in with playoff aspirations. He’s 37 years old and playing some of the cleanest football of his career. The chants at SoFi weren’t just crowd noise — they reflected what the numbers have been saying for weeks.
Davante Adams was the offseason move that changed everything. When the Rams signed him, the question was whether he had anything left after his time in Green Bay and Las Vegas. He now has touchdowns in eight straight games, even if none of those scores came from more than five yards out. What he’s actually doing is running precise routes that create space underneath and drag defenders away from Nacua and Parkinson. The offense functions differently because of him.
Tampa’s 5-1 start looks like a mirage in retrospect. The Buccaneers beat some soft early opponents, and as the schedule has toughened — Bills, Rams, now this three-game home stretch — the structural weaknesses have shown up. The secondary has been shredded in consecutive weeks. The offensive line couldn’t protect Mayfield for a single half against the Rams’ pass rush. This isn’t just a slump. It requires actual answers before the playoff push means anything.
The Rams’ defense deserves more credit than it gets. Four combined sacks from Verse and Turner. A 50-yard pick-six from their cornerback. A total of 193 yards allowed while the offense was setting the tone. Sean McVay built this team to complement Stafford with elite skill players, but the defense has quietly become the reason LA doesn’t lose close games anymore. The last time they trailed in the second half was Week 6.
