Trent McDuffie: Two Super Bowls, One Record Contract, and a New Start in LA

Who He Is

Trent McDuffie Los Angeles Rams cornerback profile 2026

Trent McDuffie is a 25-year-old cornerback for the Los Angeles Rams, born September 13, 2000 in Westminster, California. He stands 5-foot-11 and weighs 193 pounds. As of March 2026, he’s also the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history, having signed a four-year, $124 million extension with Los Angeles after the Rams acquired him from the Kansas City Chiefs.

Two Super Bowl rings. A First-Team All-Pro. A contract that reset the cornerback market. He’s 25.

What makes that last part uncomfortable for every other team in the AFC is that McDuffie was never a product of ideal circumstances in Kansas City. He played hurt in his rookie year, stepped into a secondary that wasn’t built around him, and still became the best corner on two championship rosters.

High School and the Road to Washington

McDuffie grew up in Orange County and played his sophomore and junior seasons at Servite High School in Anaheim before transferring to St. John Bosco in Bellflower for his senior year. That decision paid off. He earned All-Trinity League and All-CIF Southern Section Division 1 honors, then got a spot in the All-American Bowl. Washington came calling, and he accepted.

The Rams’ practice facility in Woodland Hills is roughly 40 miles from Westminster. His trade to LA was, in a literal sense, a homecoming.

Three Seasons at Washington

He arrived at the University of Washington in 2019 and started 11 of 13 games as a true freshman, finishing with 45 tackles and one interception. The 2020 season was four games – COVID shortened the Pac-12 schedule to almost nothing – but he started every one of them. His junior year in 2021 was the one that put him on draft boards: First-Team All-Pac-12, named to multiple All-American teams, and career totals of 94 tackles, four tackles for loss, two interceptions, 10 pass breakups, three forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries.

After that season, Dane Brugler of The Athletic ranked him as the top cornerback prospect in the entire 2022 class. McDuffie skipped his senior year and entered the draft.

The 2022 NFL Draft

Trent McDuffie 2022 NFL Draft first round 21st pick Kansas City Chiefs

Three cornerbacks went in the first 21 picks of the 2022 draft. Derek Stingley Jr. went third overall to Houston. Sauce Gardner went fourth to the Jets. McDuffie went 21st to Kansas City. At the time that felt like a fall. In 2026, McDuffie’s $31 million per year average makes him better paid than either of them – Sauce Gardner signed with Indianapolis at $30.1 million annually, Stingley with Houston at $30 million.

The Chiefs used their first of two first-round picks on McDuffie. Their secondary had finished sixth-worst in passing yards allowed per game the prior season (251.4). He was supposed to fix that.

He didn’t get the chance immediately. He tore a hamstring in the season opener on September 11, 2022 and missed his first five games on injured reserve.

Kansas City: Four Years, Two Rings

When McDuffie came back in November 2022, he stepped right into the starting lineup. He finished the year with 44 tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble across 11 games. The Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII that February, beating the Philadelphia Eagles 38-35. McDuffie started in the secondary.

The 2023 season was a different level. He recorded 80 tackles (60 solo), three sacks, and five forced fumbles. Pro Football Focus named him to its All-Pro team. The Associated Press did too – First Team. Tied for the second-most sacks by a cornerback in the first two NFL seasons in league history. The Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 25-22 in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII. Two rings.

What made that 2023 performance unusual wasn’t the coverage numbers, solid as they were. It was the pass rush. Cornerbacks don’t regularly post three sacks in a season. McDuffie did it at 22 years old in his second year.

He followed it with a quieter but still productive 2024. Second-Team All-Pro. His first career interception came in Week 15 at Cleveland, and he picked off a second pass the following week against Houston. The Chiefs made the Super Bowl again.

Then 2025 went sideways. He started all 13 games he played in, set a career high with 63 tackles, and posted seven passes defensed with one interception. But a knee issue cost him the final four games of the season. Kansas City missed the playoffs for the first time since 2021. In December, he went on injured reserve. In March, the trade happened.

His season-by-season numbers with the Chiefs:

Year G Tackles Sacks INT FF PBUs Awards
2022 11 44 1.0 0 1 – Super Bowl LVII
2023 17 80 3.0 0 5 – 1st-Team All-Pro, Super Bowl LVIII
2024 15 59 0.5 2 1 – 2nd-Team All-Pro
2025 13 63 1.0 1 1 7 –

Career totals entering 2026: 246 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks, 8 forced fumbles, 34 pass deflections, 3 interceptions across 56 games.

The Trade

Trent McDuffie Chiefs to Rams blockbuster trade 2026 NFL offseason

On March 5, 2026, the Chiefs agreed to send McDuffie to Los Angeles in exchange for the Rams’ No. 29 overall pick in the 2026 draft, plus a fifth-rounder and sixth-rounder that year and a third-round pick in 2027. Four picks for one player entering the last year of his rookie deal.

Kansas City’s decision made a certain kind of cap-table sense. McDuffie was set to count $13.63 million against the Chiefs’ books in 2026 on his fifth-year option. Had he played out that year and hit free agency, keeping him would have meant matching whatever the market offered – which turned out to be $31 million per year. Instead, the Chiefs got four picks and the ability to rebuild a secondary that had been leaking for two seasons.

Patrick Mahomes’ reaction on social media was a single word: “damn.”

McDuffie posted a longer note to Chiefs Kingdom, saying he “couldn’t have asked for a better support system.” His girlfriend Gabby Esposito, who went public with the relationship in May 2024, posted her own message before they packed for California. Brittany Mahomes and other Chiefs wives responded in the comments.

The Rams, for their part, had been 19th in passing yards allowed during the 2025 season – a real problem for a team that reached the NFC Championship Game and then couldn’t stop the pass when it mattered. GM Les Snead and coach Sean McVay wanted a shutdown corner. They also wanted someone who’d played in January. McDuffie has done it four times.

$124 Million and a Record Reset

Trent McDuffie highest paid cornerback NFL history $124 million Rams contract

Three days after the trade was agreed to, on March 8, 2026, McDuffie and the Rams finalized a four-year, $124 million extension. The $100 million guarantee broke Derek Stingley Jr.’s previous record of $89 million. The $31 million average annual value cleared Sauce Gardner’s $30.1 million. Both records, at once.

He becomes only the fourth cornerback in NFL history to sign a total deal worth $100 million or more, joining Gardner (Colts), Denzel Ward (Browns), and Jaycee Horn (Panthers).

Worth being specific about the structure: McDuffie plays the 2026 season on his fifth-year option at $13.63 million. The extension kicks in for 2027. The Rams are carrying a $10.8 million cap hit in year one, with a dead cap value of $50 million – meaning this is not a contract they can easily walk away from in 2027 if things go wrong.

What He Does on the Field

Trent McDuffie coverage grade PFF 2025 NFL cornerback analysis

His 2025 PFF grade of 75.6 ranked 12th among 114 qualifying cornerbacks. Coverage grade was 74.7 – 17th. Run defense was 78.5, which ranked 11th. For a corner to grade in the top 12 in run defense isn’t routine; most teams don’t ask their corners to do much in that phase.

The efficiency numbers are what sell it to analytics people. Opposing quarterbacks posted a 94.7 passer rating when targeting him in 2025 – second-lowest of his career. Receivers averaged 9.3 yards per reception against him, also a career low, and he allowed only 37 catches all season. His missed tackle rate was 5.9%, the best of his career.

He works in both press coverage and off-man, which matters because McVay has never been a coach who locks into one defensive system. The Chiefs ran a lot of zone behind him and he graded well there. Los Angeles will likely use him differently – closer to the line, matched up on the opponent’s No. 1 receiver most weeks.

What I’d actually watch for in 2026 is whether the pass rush translates. The Chiefs generated unusual pressure from their secondary, and McDuffie’s 5.5 career sacks came within that specific system. The Rams run different stunts, different blitz packages. Three sacks in a season may not happen again. But that might be fine – the Rams need a lockdown corner more than they need a blitzing corner.

McDuffie With the Rams

Trent McDuffie Los Angeles Rams 2026 season cornerback room Jaylen Watson

He reported to the Rams’ Woodland Hills facility in late March and signed paperwork officially. His former Chiefs teammate Jaylen Watson, another cornerback, signed with Los Angeles around the same time, giving them a known partnership in the secondary. The two played together in Kansas City from 2022 through 2025.

The Rams won Super Bowl LVI largely because Jalen Ramsey erased the opposition’s best receiver for four postseason games. Ramsey left. Los Angeles spent three years trying to replace what he brought – and in six seasons since 2019, they never found it from within the roster. The McDuffie trade is the most aggressive outside attempt to fill that gap since Ramsey himself.

Whether it works depends partly on health. McDuffie’s knee sent him to IR in December 2025, and he played just 13 of 17 games that season. He’s had hamstring problems before. He’s 25, which means the Rams are betting on the peak years – but the 2022 hamstring and the 2025 knee are two injury flags on a player who hasn’t yet played a full 17-game regular season.

That’s the one complication nobody’s fully resolved: the contract is structured for durability, but McDuffie hasn’t demonstrated it yet over a full slate. He’s been excellent in every game he’s played. He just hasn’t played all of them.
